Today we are going to talk about headaches, specifically migraines. So what is a migraine, how do we handle migraines, what are the triggers for migraines, and how can we resolve them.
So what a migraine is, is typically identified as a headache. We have all had a headache at one point or another. But what separates them is that migraine produces a significant amount of pain behind one or both of your eyes, it can even create sensitivity to light, sensitivity to sound, possibly nausea, not just a throbbing headache, but can create a stabbing-like pain. It can also come with an aura. If you are having these types of pains, you could be experiencing something more than just your run of the mill headache. The next thing is how do you identify a migraine from other forms of headaches.
The first step as your San Diego chiropractor is to ask the right questions. We take a very thorough history approach. The more information you can provide to us, the better we can ultimately help you. We specialize in headaches, whether it be tension headache, cluster headaches, menstrual or hormonal headaches, lack of food triggered headache, a lack of water or dehydration style, or migraine headaches.
How else can we identify it besides asking the right questions. The next step is we will perform a thorough and detailed examination specific to your issue. So that will help us identify more of what is causing the issue for you specifically.
Following that we perform an x-ray (if needed and warranted). We provide digital x-rays in our office that will allow us to see inside your body. Are there structural changes present, are there degenerative changes, or other underlying causes. Rather than just what you see from the surfaces.
These three key components allow us to be extremely specific in our chiropractic adjustments and approach to getting you better. It allows us to produce amazing results for so many in the same or similar situation as you with the headaches/migraines. We see these issues on a daily basis.
One of our most fantastic cases that I can think of is a young gal who was suffering with a migraine headache 3-5 times a week. Some were so bad they would last days, putting her on the floor of her home in tears. She notes that she would even miss 3-5 days of work at a time at least once a month. Following a couple of months of care, she reported that she had not had a headache in weeks. We saw her again several months after that. She reported then that she had not had a single headache or migraine headache in nearly 6 months. Had not missed a day or work that she was previously missing again 3-5 days per month. What we did once we found out the problem, we go in to adjust accordingly to what your body needs. The body tells us all so much information that we forget how intelligent it really is. We use a handheld device that is called a nervoscope that allows us to detect areas along the spine that are having issues. We palpate each specific segment of your spine/vertebrae to decide which one is out of place, in what position, is it locked up or subluxated as we call. It does not happen instantly. Now there are times where people get instant relief, but not instant reduction in nerve pressure. Shoulder Pain | San Diego Sports Chiropractor
Shoulder pain is a very complicated situation. It has so many variables to it. It can stem from several areas. So when a patient presents stating they are suffering with shoulder pain. It really becomes a challenge for your healthcare professional. So as you San Diego sports chiropractor, and extremity specialist, it is no different.
We are talking about the most vulnerable joint in our entire body. It has by the far the most amount of range of motion out of any joint in our body. And think about it, there is nothing truly holding your shoulder in place. So for an example our hip. When someone comes in with hip pain, it is very easily identifiable, very easy to diagnose the true problem because it is a ball and socket, with only so many possible issues. The femoral head is encapsulated by our hip. So now when we talk about our shoulders. It is not encapsulated like the hip. The humeral head does not have a bony structure covering it in its entirety. It is only held in place by muscles and ligaments.
The primary stabilization component of our shoulder are those muscles and ligaments, with some portions of bony structures. Some of those bony structures are the AC (acromioclavicular) joint, the glenohumeral joint and that is about all of the joint association in our shoulder. Now when we talk muscles and ligaments, we are talking about the pectoral muscles, bicep tendon, Infraspinatus tendon, Supraspinatus muscle, Teres minor, the list goes on and on of the muscles ligaments and tendons.That is why we have such a vast range of motion. There is no encapsulation of the shoulder joint, the humeral head.
So when we disclose that we have shoulder pain, it can be the practitioner's worst nightmare, because there again so many variables associated with this. Thankfully being an ex-collegiate athlete, we have a slight edge. Due to not only seeing it from the health professional, chiropractic aspect, the first hand experience has really helped allow proper diagnosis and treatment. It also allows us to understand your pain and where you are coming from.

With these shoulder injuries. There are a few things to consider or at least a few things we consider in our office. Is your shoulder blade moving appropriately. Because if it adheres to your thoracic spine that is one issue. Are your rhomboid muscles tight to the point that they do not allow mobility of your shoulder blade. Maybe you have a thoracic spine issue that inhibits mobility of your shoulder blade, which then limits shoulder mobility and you can see how things can quickly snowball from there. So therefore the pain we feel in our shoulders can actually come from your thoracic spine, or adhesion, or malfunction.
The first thing we do in our office is rule out the easier things. Because again the shoulders are complicated, so why not start with easier and work our way to the more challenging issues. So when we look at the shoulder, we first want to take a history on what happened, how did you injure it. Once we have that, we can really add on to what caused it. Because there is a big difference between someone falling and hurting their shoulder versus someone waking up with their shoulder hurting.
So we take our history, let's identify what triggered this whole thing in the first place. The next thing we will do is have you show us where it hurts. Pinpoint the area of pain. Now that lets me as your chiropractor be able to identify a little bit further. The more we know, the more you let us know, the more we can help direct your care in the most appropriate direction possible to get you fastest results.
After we identify where the problem is and how the problem occurred. Now we can go through an examination. The examination will allow us to identify is it coming from the thoracic spine, the rhomboids, So in essence we want to either rule in or rule out, is it the thoracic spine, is it the rhomboids being too tight limiting the shoulder blade movement, is it the shoulder blade biomechanics, is it tight pectoral muscles, a shoulder cuff tear, the list goes on. Could it be as simple as shoulder impingement, where the shoulder (humeral) head is impinged. We see that a lot.

Tech or Text Neck - Neck Pain - San Diego Chiropractor
Text neck, what is it, how do you get it, where did it come from. This issue is actually a common occurrence among not just Americans but all over the world. While a lot of people try to blame technology and place it upon young kids as being the ones it affects.
This does not seem to be the case anymore. We are seeing a lot of not just kids but adults and not just young adults but middle-aged as well as elderly. Basically you name it and everyone is seemingly having the same issue right now. I like to call it tech or honestly right now we've been calling it society neck.
Because everything in society has us looking down. Now that is not always a bad thing however over periods of time and certain activities will compound creating it to be substantial amounts of time.
When we look down we put our neck in a compromised position making it vulnerable to pain, to structural changes, to muscle tension, to neck stiffness, and so much more.
So what we would like to do is take a few moments to discuss this to discuss what is tech/text neck, what is some preventive things that we can do to help, what are the consequences of not doing anything.
Tech neck is currently being described as a misalignment or rather a structural change that we can identified through x-rays specifically cervical x-rays.That is one reason that we tend to take X-rays and our office is so that you can see exactly what's going on within your neck and we can properly identify diagnose Tech neck.
Some ways that you can prevent tech neck would be with good posture. So while you're sitting at a desk keep things more eye level. Hey everybody its Dr. Zach with Gonstead Family Chiropractic hope everyone's doing well here in sunny San Diego or right now looks like flood City. Just saying happy Friday and seeing what you are thankful for right now because times have changed. Things as we know them have differed. That is the way life goes, but what are you thankful for. I know that I am thankful for being able to be nice to someone. What else is that being nice to someone or performing acts of kindness such as that money, it doesn't take effort. It can be as simple as crossing paths with someone whether it be the Pacific Beach Boardwalk, Little Italy San Diego, Kearny Mesa and one of Convoy streets, many amazing restaurants, or downtown San Diego.
Just by simply saying how are you today, asking about them, or saying it was great to see you today. Those simple comments or acts of kindness can completely change somebody's perspective. Quarantine - Make Shift At Home Desk - Low Back & Neck Pain
While all of us within the county of San Diego are having to adapt to the new current norm of quarantine from the Coronavirus (covid-19). Some are having to adapt to also working at home. That means possibly a makeshift desk, computer, overall work space. Not only are we continuing to sit for long periods of time, but we are also now placing unnecessary, unavoidable strain on our low backs as well as necks. This can lead to both low back pain, neck pain, headaches, or mid back pain, simply by doing your daily job from home without the proper equipment or set up for working space.
It is beyond important to continue to strive for proper posture regardless of your working situation. That is why they have developed an entire market space of Ergonomics industry that work to get each working space optimized for each individual to reduce stress on your body. This also helps reduce workers compensation injuries and claims.
So here are some very basic tips on how to set up your home desk/working space as best as possible.
- You want your monitor approximately 24 inches away from you
- You want the top of your monitor at or slightly above eye level
- You want your elbows at a 90 degree angle
- You want your hips bent at a 90 degree angle
- You want your knees at a 90 degree angle
We Call this in general, the 90-90 rule. Elbows bent at 90, hips bent at 90, and our knees bent at 90. From that position it allows your bodies tension to reduce and puts it in a more natural comfortable state. This reduction in tension can help improve your neck pain, stiff neck, low back pain, even mid back pain and headaches.
The next thing you want to consider is the way you are sitting in your chair. You do not want to be in a slouched position as this puts a lot of strain on your low back. It also puts it in a very compromised position leaving it vulnerable to injury. So a great inexpensive way to adapt to creating a lumbar support for your back is to take a bath towel and roll it up to an appropriate diameter for your body type. Place it long ways, basically like your car seats lumbar support goes. The beauty of this is that it adaptable by simply unraveling it if it is too big for your back.
Also you want to keep some key contact points when working in any chair. The big ones are your low back not being slouched and contacting that lumbar support we just mentioned.
The next part is your mid back should be comfortably touching the chair. If it is not, that means you are leaning forward. This will set you up for mid back pain, tightness in your mid back, tension style headaches and more.
The final contact point for your spine is not really your spine in a way, but rather your head. There are two ways to make a solid contact for your neck support. The easiest way, which almost none of us do is by place the back of our heads on the head rest part of our computer chairs or even our car seats. The more challenging or time consuming way is to again roll up a towel and place it long ways on the back of our neck. This will create stability, reduce tension and strain.
The more we look forward and look down the more stress we are creating on our neck muscles as well as vertebrae (bones) in our neck. For every inch forward our head leans forward/down, it adds 10 lbs of stress on your traps, shoulders, and neck muscles (primarily levator scapula and traps). The forward head posture position is also commonly known as tech neck or text neck.
We will later cover neck stretches on how to alleviate those tension we discusses. I strongly encourage each of you to take a moment and assess your current seated position. Golf Injuries | San Diego Sports Chiropractor
Golf is a game that many people in San Diego love and enjoy playing in this beautiful weather. It's also a game many are not able to play due to low back pain, shoulder pain, elbow pain, or even mid back and neck pain. Although with all those aches and pains that can occur with the game of golf, it is also an extremely enjoyable game to play with friends, family, and possibly even have a couple of beverages out on some beautiful landscape with some great views of the city as well.

Another reason that many people develop low back pain or some of those pain that we just mentioned are due to incorrect swing mechanics, poor posture, or something that has been going on for a long period of time that was triggered during that one swing. I would be lying if I said I’ve never hurt my low back playing golf. Because I there was a moment in time where I playing golf with a bunch of friends and I actually need to be adjusted on the course to continue with that round.
The reason for developing these these pains is in part due to the nature of the game, which requires repetitive motions. A lot of us may believe the pain we feel developed from one significant injury that we can all pinpoint what it was. Such things as being in a car accident, a slip and fall, or hurting yourself while trying to pick up something up causing low back pain. However repetitive motion or what we call microtrauma can also be the reason for the pain in your spine, the reason your golf swing mechanics have altered, and the way that it’s going to develop over period of time creating the pain due to poor mechanics and repetition.
With injuries sustained while playing golf are not limited to just your low back or your mid back or even your neck but also in your shoulders and your elbows in your wrist so it’s really important to make sure that you’re doing the mechanics properly. But also want to make sure that you’re getting your spine checked to eliminate potential injuries that are coming down the pipeline because when we’re doing these motions over and over again, during a round of 9 holes, 18 holes, 36, 72, whatever that number is. Compounding how many swings per hole. That is a lot of repetitive motion. We are on a chiropractic mission or drive to help all of the golfers in San Diego not only perform better on the links, but to also allow you to play a game with friends and family whether it be a hobby or their passion, but also to improve your quality of life because the pains you are having can be related golf but will bleed into other aspects of life.
So what we wanna do is get your spine in alignment which will allow the body to adapt naturally because taking ibuprofen or some type of NSAID may not be the best answer for your body long term. By taking pharmaceuticals, while it may feel better momentarily, it is a band aid over a larger issue. Pharmaceuticals create a helping mechanics from the outside (pill) inwards, rather than creating a longer term solution by helping from the inside out (chiropractic adjustment).

Can A Chiropractor Help Decrease Pain During Pregnancy?
There is nothing quite like deciding to bring an amazing child into this world. With that being said when planning to bring a child into this world, both parents assume risks, rewards, both in the short term as well as the long term. Some may be as minor as sciatic pain, but others could be as severe as ectopic pregnancy.
Pregnancy will cause your body (or your wife's, surrogate, etc) to change, not just physically, but internally, hormonally, chemically, structurally, and more.

1. Round Ligament Pain
Round ligament is a ligament that supports the uterus on both sides. This pain of the Round Ligament is very painful but is also very common. These ligaments are stretched out during pregnancy as growth occurs they begin to become more and more stretched. As previously mentioned. During pregnancy there is a chemical (hormone) that is released naturally called Relaxin. This hormone allows laxity to occur in joints, ligaments, etc. During this time between the pubic bones relax and have the ability to move/shift about. When this occurs it can develop pain in that region. As a chiropractor our job is to align the pubic area through spine, sacral, and ilium adjustments to reduce that pain.
5. Sacroiliac Pain
Much like with the pubic symphysis pain due to Relaxin being released the same thing occurs here. With the Relaxin release comes increased mobility of your joints. How To Boost Your Immune System Naturally
We all have heard of whats going on in this world currently. It is known as a pandemic related to Coronavirus (COVID-19).
